This massive barn was built in the early 1900’s by immigrants who came over from Norway in The late 1800’s. It was one of the finest and largest barns in the state of North Dakota. The farming, which was all done by horses had a large section you can’t see and was the place where many farm horses were kept. Cattle were sheltered in the section on the right..
Because of the long hard winters, the upper part of the barns had to hold enough hay to feed all the farm animals for six months.
Although deteriorated over the years, this huge structure is still standing on the wind swept fields of North Dakota.
In 1969, Monte Toon began his career as a watercolorist. He credits the late Charles Sanderson of Wichita, Kansas, with setting him on his life-long path of watercolor painting. Sanderson inspired new approaches and techniques. Later, the works of Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth and Edward Hopper would influence Toon's work. More than 54 years experience has defined Toon's style in his exclusive use of watercolor. In 1991, a turning point occurred in Toon's work. Travels in Canada, New England and the east coast broadened his range of subject matter. By setting goals and directions of purpose, Monte enhanced and elevated his works to new heights resulting in numerous solo shows of merit. He refers to this change as a re-dedication to...

Thank you Michael. Of course it doesn't show from this view but the left side of this image of the barn extends to the other side as well, making it a "T" shaped structure. I understand the horses used in farming were kept in that part of the barn. This painting was extremely well received by the person it was gifted to at Christmas, 2017. He had worked in and around this barn from a very early age, and through his youthful years.
