Artist's Description

The Fortress of Louisburg National Historical Park on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia was one of the many highlights of our Adventure Caravan RV tour of the Gaspe, Maritime Providences and Newfoundland. This fortress is undergoing massive reconstruction, done in such fine detail and craftsmanship it is hard to believe many of the structures that appear to be century's old are indeed quite new. Individuals in period costumes add to the authenticity of the complex. As with many of my paintings I take photos of my subject matter to use later back in my studio. This image is made up of two photos. The interior of one of the large buildings served as the backdrop for the young girl figure. I found her outside on the parade grounds watching intently as two gentlemen pondered the correct loading of a large musket. Putting the two images together made for a much safer experience than the danger she found out on the parade grounds. This piece is done on illustration board. I used an air...

Monte Toon

In 1969, Monte Toon began his career as a watercolorist. He credits the late Charles Sanderson of Wichita, Kansas, with setting him on his life-long path of watercolor painting. Sanderson inspired new approaches and techniques. Later, the works of Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth and Edward Hopper would influence Toon's work. More than 54 years experience has defined Toon's style in his exclusive use of watercolor. In 1991, a turning point occurred in Toon's work. Travels in Canada, New England and the east coast broadened his range of subject matter. By setting goals and directions of purpose, Monte enhanced and elevated his works to new heights resulting in numerous solo shows of merit. He refers to this change as a re-dedication to...
