Artist's Description
One of my nieces sent a photo to me a few days ago. Her husband’s cousin took the photo on her ranch in Oregon. My niece thought I might want to paint it. I was unsure, I have never painted a horse before…but then I have not painted an elephant or a giraffe either…so I agreed to try it. It was a wonderful experience, I thoroughly enjoyed creating this painting. So many good things about this image, the fact he is looking one way, the horse looking the other and the little calf looking straight dead on to us…wondering what in the world is going on! But more than anything it speaks of the bond between those who deal with animals, their dedication, their compassion to nourish and be mindful of their needs. I am amazed that Reyes could lift this calf to his horse, and then getting on the horse! A cold morning, just another day on the ranch.

In 1969, Monte Toon began his career as a watercolorist. He credits the late Charles Sanderson of Wichita, Kansas, with setting him on his life-long path of watercolor painting. Sanderson inspired new approaches and techniques. Later, the works of Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth and Edward Hopper would influence Toon's work. More than 54 years experience has defined Toon's style in his exclusive use of watercolor. In 1991, a turning point occurred in Toon's work.
