Description
One of my nieces sent a photo to me a few days ago. Her husband’s cousin took the photo on her ranch in Oregon. My niece thought I might want to paint it. I was unsure, I have never painted a horse before…but then I have not painted an elephant or a giraffe either…so I agreed to try it. It was a wonderful experience, I thoroughly enjoyed creating this painting. So many good things about this image, the fact he is looking one way, the horse looking the other and the little calf looking straight dead on to us…wondering what in the world is going on! But more than anything it speaks of the bond between those who deal with animals, their dedication, their compassion to nourish and be mindful of their needs. I am amazed that Reyes could lift this calf to his horse, and then getting on the horse! A cold morning, just another day on the ranch.
Her cousin wrote, “I took this photo 3 days ago, which is hard to believe as it certainly doesn’t look like it’s the middle of April. This picture is not staged either, it is the real deal. I was headed to work and saw Reyes (the Cowboy) packing the calf on his horse. I quickly jumped the fence and got a couple of pictures-luckily for me the guys are used to me interrupting their work like this.
As I have stated before we calve our cows out in the pasture. This calf was born early in the morning and it had snowed. The calf was wet and cold, so Reyes packed him on his horse to bring to his truck. We put the calf in a “Hot box” to get him warmed up and then he went back with his mother.”
