For over 40 years I passed near this old mill in Independence, Kansas. "One day I'm going to take some photos of that old place and do a painting," I told myself many times. In 2010 I decided to finally do the painting. I arrived in Independence with my camera to be told "They tore it down two weeks ago." Fortunately I had access to previous photos I pieced together to create this image. The area where it once stood for many years is now as barren as the foreground in this painting.

Thanks to each of you for your comments. Yes, Debbie you are correct, places like this mill and the barns you mentioned are slowly going away. The new steel barns, while strong and functional. lack the unique qualities displayed by the old relics of the years past. Lesson to be learned: never pass up the opportunity to take those photos, it may not be there the next time you pass by.

Wow, it is so sad that they tore it down, I am thankful that you managed to find some older shots. I have shots of barns that are gone and others left to rot. It breaks my heart that we are slowly loosing a part of out history that can never be replaced.
