Description

This is one of the first of a series of paintings of images from the Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill in Kentucky. I had given up on this painting, it just didn't have any snap to it. I finally decided I was going to save it or ruin it. I mixed up the dark brown colors of the trees in the distance and began to paint them in an almost reckless abandon manner. It worked, it caused the building to be defined, to be separated from the sky in the distance. Values are very important.

Monte Toon

The Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill in Kentucky will transfer you back in time if you go there and spend a day you will long remember. Kings Landing in New Brunswick, Canada will have the same effect, stepping back into the mid 1800's. I highly recommend both places.
