We visited Canada's Largest Living History Museum in Calgary, Alberta in the summer of 2016. A group of young girls were there on a field trip, each one dressed in period costumes complete with white bonnets. They were learning many facets of our past, work, play, commerce and education. I found this image in the blacksmith shop where she was intently watching the man work, so focused she was like a little statue. I took two reference photos of her, this is the first painting to be completed. I like the loose quick strokes in most of the painting, contrasted with the smooth controlled treatment of her face.
In 1969, Monte Toon began his career as a watercolorist. He credits the late Charles Sanderson of Wichita, Kansas, with setting him on his life-long path of watercolor painting. Sanderson inspired new approaches and techniques. Later, the works of Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth and Edward Hopper would influence Toon's work. More than 54 years experience has defined Toon's style in his exclusive use of watercolor. In 1991, a turning point occurred in Toon's work. Travels in Canada, New England and the east coast broadened his range of subject matter.
