He is still in my memory, now 70 years later. An old man in our neighborhood, a loner who sat on a wooden bench affixed to two towering trees in his front yard. I have misty recollections of sitting on that bench as an 8-year-old, next to this person I thought to be a Civil War soldier. (The Red Badge of Courage movie was the inspiration for that thought.) I do not recall his words, or the many moments of quiet rest from my times of playing nearby. He smelled of tobacco, his beard and fingers stained in walnut shades of brown from the years of nicotine. He lived in a shack like structure, a small house in need of repair, a blithe to the neighborhood.
As I neared the finishing of this painting, I pondered the thought of total “completion” ...only two elements were important...him, and the house. I had already removed the trees on either side. Why bother with grasses and the clutter of a foreground.... he is enough, the house is enough...

In 1969, Monte Toon began his career as a watercolorist. He credits the late Charles Sanderson of Wichita, Kansas, with setting him on his life-long path of watercolor painting. Sanderson inspired new approaches and techniques. Later, the works of Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth and Edward Hopper would influence Toon's work. More than 54 years experience has defined Toon's style in his exclusive use of watercolor. In 1991, a turning point occurred in Toon's work. Travels in Canada, New England and the east coast broadened his range of subject matter.
