I could not have posed her better, the setting, the props, her costume and that wonderful single source lighting! Perfect. She is an employee at Jamestown, representing a young maiden of the early days of that settlement. Very much in keeping with the subject matter and style of the Dutch Masters, she made an ideal image for a great composition. The original painting was to be a vertical format, the remainder of the table,her dress, shoes and the floor were to be included. I got this far with the painting, half way down and decided to put a mat on it to frame it in this manner. Immediately I knew this was a much stronger composition than including all those other elements. 50 years of watercolor painting...and I'm still learning!
In 1969, Monte Toon began his career as a watercolorist. He credits the late Charles Sanderson of Wichita, Kansas, with setting him on his life-long path of watercolor painting. Sanderson inspired new approaches and techniques. Later, the works of Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth and Edward Hopper would influence Toon's work. More than 54 years experience has defined Toon's style in his exclusive use of watercolor. In 1991, a turning point occurred in Toon's work. Travels in Canada, New England and the east coast broadened his range of subject matter.
