Description
I was astonished to see what she had created, this 8 year old girl who lived in the rent house next door. The day before she had played for over an hour in the dirt under a big oak tree at the edge of our property. Knowing she had gone to school, I ventured over to see the results of her playtime. A brick, broken in two pieces lay in the dirt. There in the middle, between the two ragged edged pieces, stood a small white flag, suspended on a piece of strong wire.
I knew she was too young to know or grasp what she had created in her time of play. But I knew.
I knew her parents were getting a divorce. I knew her family and her life was being torn apart, just as broken and as separated as those two pieces of brick. Where she found the flag, I have no idea, perhaps a marker left by a repairman.
A house divided, shattered with torn edges indicating a violent separation. Caught in the middle of it all, their young daughter raises an un-fluttering flag, a symbol of, giving up, giving, in to the uncontrollable situation in this stage of her life.
And nearby a small leaf begins its life, perhaps it is her. And over there is another leaf, smaller, just beginning to grow also, perhaps her younger sister.
The late afternoon sun creates a dramatic image of a stage set for a play to beginor end. A busted brick and a small white flag. She had no choice but to surrender to the consequences of her family being torn apart.
